THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

From One School Nurse to Another:

My Why, Then and Now

Hello School Nurses!

Over 30 years ago, I walked into a school nurse's office for the very first time. I had no idea what I was getting into—just a lot of hope and a desire to help students.

Since then, I've cared for thousands of students. I've managed everything from scraped knees and stomachaches to life-threatening emergencies. I've comforted worried parents, partnered with incredible educators, celebrated student successes, and learned more than I ever imagined possible.

I didn't know back then that school nursing would become my life's work.

But here I am—more than 30 years later—still passionate about school nursing, still learning something new, and still amazed by the impact school nurses have every single day.

Somewhere along the way, something else happened too.

I realized how many school nurses are expected to figure this job out on their own. Many step into a health office with little orientation, limited support, and a long list of responsibilities that no one really prepared them for.

I remember those early days.

There wasn't a roadmap.

I learned one student, one phone call, one spreadsheet, and one mistake at a time.

That's when my focus began to shift—not away from school nursing, but even deeper into it.

Today, my mission extends beyond the walls of my own health office. Through The School Nurse LLC, I enjoy supporting both new and experienced school nurses by creating practical resources, continuing education, templates, workshops, and a community where school nurses can learn from one another.

Whether you're looking for answers to a difficult situation, editable resources that save time, or simply reassurance that someone else understands what you're experiencing, I hope you'll find something here that makes your job a little easier.

If you're just beginning your school nursing journey, welcome.

If you've been doing this for years, thank you for continuing to share your knowledge and encourage the next generation of school nurses.

School nursing has given me so much more than a career. It's given me purpose, lifelong friendships, opportunities I never expected, and the privilege of caring for students and supporting fellow school nurses across the country.

If something I've created has helped make your journey a little easier, then every late night spent writing blog posts, designing templates, recording courses, answering emails, or creating new resources has been worth it.

Here's to the school nurses—past, present, and future.

I'm so glad you're here.

Be Helpful and Kind- this is the reminder you'll see near Nurse Nelda's office door. These colorful reminders are perfect for a large wall space and even an office bulletin board. We can all appreciate how the hand sanitizer is front and center too!  Nurse Nelda's office is located inside a middle school building. One of my favorite Dr Seuss books for graduating middle school students (and even high school & college) is Oh The Places You'll Go! There are over 300 Oh The Places You'll Go bulletin board decoration items available on Amazon too!

COT AREA

Notice how Nurse Nelda is using her much need storage cabinets to also provide separation between the cots- I love that idea! Great use of using the supplies you have to create the space you need. Each filing cabinet is labeled for each grade level- 6th, 7th, and 8th. With nearly 10  years of middle school, school nursing experience, I know there are probably many days when Nurse Nelda has a full house on these cots!

TREATMENT AREA
Nurse Nelda has maximized her office space by creating several treatment areas. The main area includes the sink, full size refrigerator, and microwave. The second area has a wall eye chart, a small mirror, paper towels, and a bright yellow supply cart. Lastly, she has her grab-n-go emergency backpack handy by the door. The Positively Perfect theme is carried throughout each of these areas with inspiration quotes and wall decor!

Nurse Nelda has a nice desk area with two laptops which makes me hopeful that she has help in her office! I love all of the positive, motivational wall decor items that she has used to make the space her own and to give positive messages to her students. How School Nurse Holly Decorates Her Office!

Helpful School Nurse Tip: As a school nurse, you spend a countless number of hours in your office each day. Having an office space that feels inviting for both you and your students should be a priority.  Create an organized, calming space with the help of these pictures. Have fun!

WHY DECORATE & ORGANIZE YOUR SCHOOL NURSE OFFICE?

There are many articles available on the benefits of having an organized work space. Let's highlight a few key points before we get started.

Benefits of An Organized Office:
  • Makes a Good First Impression
  • Increases Productivity
  • Reduces Stress Levels
  • Saves Time
  • Boost Moral
All of the above plus more!  Now, let's take a look at Nurse Holly's amazing space. Remember, if you want your office featured in an upcoming blog post then send pictures to theschoolnurse@diaryofaschoolnurse.com  THANK YOU :)

TEXAS SIZED SCHOOL NURSE OFFICE REVEAL

Nurse Holly was kind enough to share her office inspiration pictures with the DOASN readers and I am so happy she did!  She is a district school nurse and a school nurse at the high school level. Her office screams WELCOME with it's organization, functional  stations, medical decor & more! I'm certain her students and staff feel safe and have a sense of calm when they enter through these school nurse office doors.

ENTRY

It's always nice to make a great first impression and Nurse Holly's office offers two doors for just that!  There are two entrance doors (one for students and one mainly for staff) and also a door to a private bathroom! These doors provide more spaces to decorate and welcome students and staff into her office.

COT AREA

The placement of the cot to the work station offers enough space for distance, but it also close enough to keep an eye an the student who might be resting or sitting on the cot while the nurse is at the desk area. How many of you are jealous of her amazing Welch Allyn assessment tools?!

DESK & TREATMENT AREA
I heard a rumor once that some school nurses don't have running water & sometimes not even a bathroom or two in their offices and I can't imagine! Thankfully, Nurse Holly is not one of those nurses; she has a sink with running water available in her office and even a private bathroom.  Look closely- she has two computers! Do you too? I do and I will never, ever be able to return to just one monitor!

MONEY SAVING IDEAS FROM NURSE HOLLY!
One of the most frustrating aspects about decorating and organizing  school nurse offices is the budget- or lack there of :(  Personally, I've purchased actual decoration items in my office with my own personal money. Therefore, I am always looking for ways to repurpose items I already have.

Nurse Holly has found a few ways to save on the decor items found throughout her office too-
"My “cheap” way of decorating is to either create my own on Canva and have them printed OR purchase printable graphics on Etsy then have them printed at Walgreens as a “board print”- you can purchase in various sizes. They look nicer than a regular posted but cheap enough that you can change them frequently if you wanted!" -Nurse Holly

When I am able to purchase something with funds then I am looking for the best price and most resourceful option for the funds I am allowed to spend. For me- AMAZON has been the way 99.7% of the time. My school district has a business account which offers free, Prime shipping and the prices are usually the least expensive I can find!  Visit The School Nurse Amazon storefront here!

I'd love to share your office pictures with other DOASN readers.
